Mets, Sheffield close to deal

The New York Mets are apparently close to signing outfielder Gary Sheffield, who was recently released by the Detroit Tigers.

Sheffield, who is still owed $14 million from the Tigers, was also being courted by the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds. If he does choose the Mets, he would sign for the league minimum of $400,000.

Injuries to his shoulder and oblique limited the 41-year-old Sheffield to just 114 games for the last place Tigers a year ago, as he batted .225 with 19 homers and 57 runs batted in.

The 2004 MVP runner-up with the Yankees, Sheffield is just one home run shy of 500 for his career. In 21 seasons with the Brewers, Padres, Marlins, Dodgers, Braves, Yankees and Tigers, Sheffield has a .292 batting average and 1,633 RBI.
